We had great turn-out for the first Fem2.0 Twittercast last night, and we can’t wait for next Sunday! "What does feminism mean to you?" sparked many different threads among everyone that was there, and we saw lots of themes emerge. Just a few:

  • reactions to the term "feminism," the public view of the term
  • women and religion; patriarchy in religion
  • feminism for all: what it means for different races, classes, genders
  • what issues are "feminist" issues
  • what feminism2.0 means, from multiple perspectives
  • teaching younger generations about sex education and feminism
  • terminology and word choice: using "woman" instead of "female," "feminist" versus "womanist"
  • sexualization in the media and pop culture
  • redefining gender roles for men AND women

Read through the conversation by clicking here and seeing everyone’s Tweets that were tagged with "fem2," "fem2.0" or "fem2pt0." (Hit "search" again on that page to see the most up-to-date Tweets.) If you weren’t sure how to follow the conversation last night or want to learn how for future casts, reading the conversation thread is a good Twittercast 101. For upcoming conversations and when you are Tweeting about the conference in general, please write the tag "#fem2" in your messages so everyone can see your responses! There was some confusion about which tag to use; stick to #fem2 and please encourage others to do the same.

Thanks to everyone who is following Fem2.0 and who participated, and we’ll see you next Sunday at 10pm EST to ask: "What topics should we be sure to cover at the conference?"

I enjoyed following this last night but none of my tweets posted. I could see on my Twitter page (I’ve since deleted all of them) but they never posted on the chat

Anne, did you include the tag at the end? We should have made this more clear during the cast, but they would have posted if you had included the tag #fem2 or #fem2pt0 at the end of your posts — perhaps helpful advice for next Sunday. I’ll be sure to explain this more clearly next time.

I missed the first twittercast (late Sunday brain fade — sorry) and reading the twitter archive is pretty overwhelming. I think I see the point of twitter, but the mix of @ messages (separate conversations) and on-point comments gets hard to follow.

Would it add any more structure to use the tweetchat.com rooms for this? i.e.

Sign up for a twitter account
Go to tweetchat.com and login using the twitter account
Go to *one* “room” (i.e. #fem2 if we could all agree on that; or #fem0118 to make it easier to find the specific twittercast later though it takes 3 more characters of the 140)
    Post and follow conversations there

Or would that not be enough to handle all the traffic? [I've no firsthand experience with tweetchat.com.]

I look forward to making connections in the twittercasts and at the conference, but I’m not sure that following *everyone* else who’s following Fem2pt0 is something that’s going to work for me (an admitted twitter dropout). So if this doesn’t work, I’ll use the twitter search function next Sunday evening — just let us all know what hashtag is to be used.

    Thanks so much!
