What Makes a Leader?

Women’s eNews launched the 21 Leaders in 2002 as a response to Time Magazine’s Man of the Year. We ask our readers to nominate those people who are making a difference and improving women’s lives around the world. More than 300 nominations were received this year.

In the grueling process that follows, the Women’s eNews staff and board try furiously to whittle the numbers down, a process which always makes us regret that we’re not honoring more. When we look at the nominees, we want to see them meet the fundamental criteria of being committed to improving the lives of women and girls. We work to select a group that represents our diverse interests and readership, crossing age, race, nationality, religion, ethnicity and so forth. Each May, Women’s eNews honors the leaders at a gala in New York. Attendance at this year’s event is expected to be 300.

In anticipation of our Gala to honor this year’s 21 Leaders on Thursday night, we wanted to open a wider discussion about leadership: Where do we need leadership today? Which sectors of women’s lives – health, work, safety, etc  – need more representation? Who’s already amplifying women’s voices?

Previous winners can be found here: 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002.

This year’s 21 Leaders for the 21st Century can be found here.

Join us and hopefully some of our board members and previous winners on Sunday Night!
