Coming from a Chinese background, I certainly have observed firsthand the Chinese preference for boys. But here's a note of optimism for you: I think, with time, that cultural preference will wither as China adjusts to a 21st century economy, just as Japan did. In Japan, girls are the preferred gender, as families realize that in a world where members no longer live in the same village let alone the same house, it's usually the daughter who will come home to take care of you in your old age.
