US Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and Celinda Lake, president of Lake Research Partners, will join Fem2.0′s last regular segment of the Wake Up! blog radio series, happening this Friday at 1:00 PM EST. In a discussion entitled, Fighting Words! Creating Change for Working Families, with host Suzanne Turner, Momsrising Executive Director Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, and Family Values@Work Consortium Executive Director Ellen Bravo, we’ll discuss the current campaigns to win new protections so that all of us can have a job AND a personal life.

Tune in, here.

We continue the Wake Up! series tomorrow, with a look at work/life and African-American families. Work/life balance has always been a challenging discussion to have in this community, because, for many, balance doesn’t exist when there are no choices to negotiate. African-American women are a diverse range of single, professional, married, working mothers, but receiving an average of 68 to 48 cents on the dollar, so it’s even more of a delicate juggling act. Host Shireen Mitchell will be joined by Avis Jones-DeWeever, director of research & policy at the Center for African-American Women, National Council of Negro Women; JusticeFergie, Blogalicious co-founder and MamaLaw blogger; and Keida-Ann Borgella, who blogs at Girls Just Wanna Have Funds.

The Wake Up! blog radio series examines how work/life policies and issues impact particular communities. All the segments are recorded and available as podcasts here.

Next week, we begin the Wake Up! blog carnival, where we hope people will speak up and share their opinions, perspectives and personal experiences in work/life — on their blogs or through the Fem2.0 blog — raising enough voices so that opinion leaders and lawmakers begin to pay attention to how tough it is out here for everyday Americans and to deliver on legislation like Paid Sick Leave and Paid Family Leave.
