We Are Woman: A National Rally for Solidarity & Inspiration

More than a thousand laws have been introduced threatening reproductive freedom, abortion access, women’s healthcare, and birth control. The Paycheck Fairness Act, which would have ensured working women equal pay for equal work, was struck down in the Senate. And we still don’t have an Equal Rights Amendment to resolve all of these issues in one swift measure. The past few years have not been kind to America’s female half.

For those of us fighting against the war being waged against women by conservative legislators throughout our country, the onslaught of negativity far surpasses the victories we’ve managed. On Saturday, August 18th, a grassroots organization called We Are Woman has plans to change all that.

When the five co-founders met online earlier this year, they formed a bond over the anger they felt toward a political system that seemed prepared to violate their rights at every turn. Inspired by Erin Nanasi’s viral video, “We are Warriors,” they adopted the name We Are Woman and set out to host a rally that would bring thousands of women and allies to the nation’s capital in a display of solidarity.

Next week, the all-volunteer organization will realize its goal as thousands of individuals descend on the west lawn of the Capitol for speeches, musical performances, and comedy presented by more than a dozen diverse activists and associations.

Without support from the right-wing media that draws so much attention for their anti-women causes and rallies, without corporate sponsorship, We Are Woman has been a grassroots effort through and through. Their volunteers have secured support and participation from Planned Parenthood and NOW, with endorsements from other prestigious groups including CODEPINK, the Coalition for Labor Union Women, the National Equal Rights Amendment Alliance, the Rainbow Push Coalition-Florida, and numerous others.

What transpires in Washington one week from Saturday will be a testament to both the work of a small group of committed volunteers and the absolute, undeniable need for women and their allies to stand up and fight back against the mounting war against them. It will be proof of democracy in action, and the ripples of inspiration, education, and activism that begin on the lawn that day will be felt into the November election cycle and beyond.
