The Value of Equal Pay Day for Men

Every time I bring up Equal Pay Day (or Unequal Pay Day as I prefer to think of it), some idiot (usually an unenlightened man) lectures me about women’s choices.  Women choose careers that allow them to be with their kids more, so of course they get paid less overall, as a group. Now, let’s [...]

How To Make a Girl Cooperate After You’ve Abducted Her

Slap her.  That’s right – I didn’t want to hold you in suspense any longer.  None of this ‘teaser sentence’ stuff where you are halfway through the blog post before you get the answer that you’ve been waiting for. The answer is: slap her.  At least, that’s what a new video game, "Duke Nukem Forever" (set to [...]

Banging Chicks: The Language of Violence and Sexuality

Yesterday, fellow blogger Maggie Arden wrote a post called "Words Matter" on Fem2.0 about the use of language to devalue women. She was right about the idea that our every day language and the portrayal of women even in just the written media contributes to the overall discrimination of women. But the problem is even more [...]

Moving Forward! (Mind the Gap)

This past week, I had the privilege of attending two conferences about women’s rights – the CARE National Conference and Celebration and the Feminist Majority Foundation’s National Young Feminist Leadership Conference.  Both conferences featured keynote speakers and issue advocacy workshops, and then culminated in a day of lobbying on Capitol Hill.  While the conferences touched [...]

Victims or Agents? Carla Koppell on the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day

Anybody who pays even the slightest attention to the world around them has a right to sometimes be a little confused about the lives women lead.  In America, we see news about women earning more Bachelor’s degrees than men while simultaneously being bombarded with words and images that portray women as mindless sex objects.  Internationally, [...]

Protecting Women=Promoting Prostitution: Similarities between the Anti-Women Agendas in Afghanistan and the United States

What do anti-abortion US activist Lila Rose and the Karzai-led government of Afghanistan have in common?  Turns out, a lot.  It seems that people who are out to deny women basic health services and control over their lives like to use similar techniques – mainly, accusing the groups that actually DO help women of misusing [...]

Welcome to South Dakota: The Anti-Choice State

Interested in murdering abortion providers without penalty?  You may soon have your chance!  A provision expanding the definition of "justifiable homicide" to include killings that are intended to prevent harm to a fetus was added to HB 1171, a law under consideration in South Dakota.  This bill was voted out of committee and is now [...]

Is There Common Ground with the Pro-Life Movement?

The question of abortion, or reproductive health as the Left calls it, is one of the most hotly debated issues in America today.  Now, I don’t agree with the "pro-life" view that life begins at conception and that abortion is murder.  But I respect that point of view.  And I’m ok with people having different [...]

Is it so bad to redefine rape? HR3, #DearJohn, and Women’s Sexuality

Despite promising to focus on jobs and the economy, Republicans have introduced HR3, “The No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act," which would make it virtually impossible for any woman anywhere to use insurance to pay for an abortion. Many excellent pieces have been written by the feminist community about the monstrosity that is this bill, and I don’t [...]

The State of (Women in) the Union: Tonight’s Speech

The very first exchange in Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues is as follows, “I bet you’re worried.” “We were worried.” “We were worried about vaginas.” I’ll admit it, after being a fervent Hillary Clinton supporter for years (and not just because I’m a New Yorker or a Seven Sisters College graduate), when Barack Obama won [...]
